The Pain of Getting Stuck: How Long Does It Actually Take to Improve Your Surfing?

We’ve all been there. You started with the basics, in the white wash, you caught the first wave, and for a while, you felt like you were evolving every single session. Then, it happened: the wall. You’re paddling out and sometimes catching waves, but still missing a lot of good waves or not turning enough. You’re watching the same sections pass you by, and despite putting in the hours, you feel like your surfing hasn’t truly leveled up in months or months.

If you’re feeling frustrated, take a deep breath: we all have been there!

Why is this phase so difficult?

The transition from "intermediate" to "advanced" is the most challenging phase in a surfer’s journey. In the beginning, volume is enough to get better. You just need to catch more waves. But at a certain point, volume alone stops working. You can spend ten hours in the water and still repeat the same mistakes.

The struggle doesn't come from a lack of effort - it comes from a lack of feedback.

How long does it actually take to progress?

There is no magic number of days, but there is a logic to improvement. Surfing is a high-skill sport with a massive technical overhead. Without eyes on your movement, you can’t progress.

Many surfers spend years working on bad habits. By the time they realize something is wrong, those movements are hard-wired into their muscle memory. The goal isn't just to "surf more", it’s to surf better

Breaking through the barrier

The fastest way to move past this stuck phase is to stop guessing and start diagnosing.

• Capture your sessions: You can't fix what you can't see. Using tools like Surfline or even a simple phone setup to get footage of your rides is the first step.

• Get professional eyes on your clips: Generic tutorials are great for theory, but they won't tell you why you are bogging down in your bottom turn. You need a coach who can look at your specific footage and tell you exactly what to fix. Video analysis from expert coaches allows you to get genuine feedback on your surfing. From bottom turns to punting airs, analysis helps you see the setup you need to perform these maneuvers, and progress in your surfing.
